Studying Coral Reefs using AI
Coral reefs are hard to study. Despite their best efforts, there is only so much time in a day for a research team to work on the reef - automation and AI are here to help! By automating tasks like counting living and dead coral colonies, algae, fish of a certain species, etc, teams can spend more time doing actual science. Artificial intelligence is here to stay, so it's nice to see it applied for our greater good!

ReefMan is back - A Tank & Channel Update
Просмотров 9488 месяцев назад
It's been a long time, but I'm back with an update on the channel and my tank. I probably won't make a video every week going forward - they do take quite a lot of time to produce - but I will try to make one at least once a month or when I find a particularly interesting paper to share with you all. Sorry it has been so long! Don't forget to like and subscribe if you enjoyed this video! I uplo...
Fish Food's Nutrition Facts
Просмотров 1,5 тыс.2 года назад
What's in that fish food? How to understand the nutrition facts that your fish food is giving you so you can make smart choices about the food you feed your reef tank. The US FDA or State regulations require that guaranteed analysis labels show some things (like crude protein, crude fat, crude fiber, and moisture), and some companies go beyond that. In general, foods with higher levels of prote...
What's the best coral food for growth?
Просмотров 3,5 тыс.2 года назад
Isochrysis galbana, an easy to grow algae, is one of the best foods for Acropora in our reef tanks. For less than $100 you can grow nearly endless amounts of this phytoplankton for your coral and feed your reef. It's obvious that we should feed our fish, but less people feed their corals. Of those that do, most of you are probably feeding LPS corals, or maybe Zoanthus, Ricordia, that sort of co...
Conveyor Belts of Mucus - Water Flow On & In Our Corals
Просмотров 1,1 тыс.2 года назад
Mucus. Hydrodynamics. Coral Biology. They seem like such different topics, but there's really a lot going on in coral - on and under the polyps on surfaces of the colorful corals in our reef tanks. Acropora, Montipora, Acanthastrea... they all can create complex currents in the water near them using tiny hairs. Many, including all our SPS, create interior networks and channels (called a gastrov...
Reef Tank Update - Evansi Anthias, Cyanobacteria, Great White Skimmers, and Red Dragon DC pumps!
Просмотров 1,5 тыс.2 года назад
There's all kinds of stuff going on in the reef tank now. A new GW-12 protein skimmer, making progress on my manifold, new Kamoer X2SR water changes, and the anthias are all doing well too! Lots of cyanobacteria has replaced the algae I had, but I think that'll resolve itself. You can skip around using this table of contents if you like. 0:00 May 2022 reef tank update 0:26 Evansi Anthias - Care...
Homemade Live Rock from Cement & Oyster Shells and cycling your new reef tank!
Просмотров 6 тыс.2 года назад
You can make your own live rocks with cement (CEM II type with limestone) and crushed oyster shells so that you can make the reef tank aquascape of your deams! By making your own, you can produce them in any shape or size, all exactly as you like - and at the same time limit your effect on wild reefs. Aquacultured live rock is another good option, where quarried dry rock (like MarcoRocks) is le...
Pyronotanthias?!? A whole new genus of Anthias!
Просмотров 1,4 тыс.2 года назад
Anthias are some of the most beautiful fish available for our reef tanks. They've even been bred in captivity - but their care requirements are not always easy to meet. They often need specialized care, and if you can meet that then these amazing fish will provide endless activity and brilliant colors swimming in the open waters of your reef tank. But, in order to know how to care for those ant...
AquaBiomics - Testing for Bacteria, Parasites, and Pathogens in your reef tank!
Просмотров 1,2 тыс.2 года назад
AquaBiomics is a relatively new company doing DNA and microbiome testing for our reef tanks. By sending in a sample, you get a report back about all sorts of things that are living unseen in your tank. Beyond just simple interest, you can detect things like Ich, Uronema, Brooklynella, Acroproa or Montipora eating flatworms, and way more! They can even tell you some of the species of sponges you...
Fish make lots of sound on coral reefs!
Просмотров 4,7 тыс.2 года назад
Have you ever listened to your clownfish? Really sat down, stuck a hydrophone in your reef tank, and listened? No? Well here's your chance to find out what you've been missing! Lots of pops and snaps of tiny little clownfish teeth as they interact with each other to establish dominance in our tanks! In fact, we know of over 100 families of fish that contain species that make some sort of sound....
How Hybrid Fish and Corals can Create New Species
Просмотров 1,4 тыс.2 года назад
Hybrid reef fish are available infrequently in the hobby, and they always go for almost crazy amounts of money. It turns out, in the wild hybrids are far less common - occurring all over in corals and mostly at the boundary between two species' ranges in fish. The only catch is that probably most hybrids look exactly like a normal fish - you'd never know that it was a hybrid unless you look int...
The Ideal Reef Tank Temperature & Why You Should Care
Просмотров 14 тыс.2 года назад
Reef tanks are usually filled with colorful fish and coral from around the world. What do all those animals have in common though? They're all from coral reefs from ocean waters near the equator! While those waters are warming, we don't need to let our tanks do the same - controlling temperature doesn't have to be hard! Letting your tank swing a degree or two each day is likely to be fine if yo...
The GHL Ion Director - Is it worth it? Setup & Thoughts on Reef Tanks.
Просмотров 4,3 тыс.2 года назад
The GHL Ion Director is here, measuring my reef tank's Calcium, Magnesium, Potassium, Sodium, and Nitrate levels every day at 1:30 pm. I love automation, and hate having to manually mix up vials of chemicals for my own water tests - so the idea of a box sitting under my tank quietly testing my water every single day sounds amazing! It does work, and the results are mostly consistent (one day wa...
What's the best size for a reef tank?
Просмотров 4,1 тыс.2 года назад
Do you need a big aquarium to build a great reef tank? Nope! You can build a great reef tank at any size from a canning jar up to your local neighborhood lagoon - it all comes down to two things. What do you want to keep in your reef tank? How much money do you have to spend now, and down the road for maintenance? Equipment and maintenance on a smaller tank is going to be orders of magnitude ch...
Aquascaping Reef Tanks with Live Rock
Просмотров 4,8 тыс.2 года назад
One of the great parts of setting up a new reef tank or really any aquarium is aquascaping. In reef tanks, we aquascape using live rock. From a simple stack of rock held together via the weight of the rocks to the most artistic floating platform of coral held together with acrylic rods, PVC, or superglue it's all possible with just a little effort. You can connect rock and make your tank's rock...

Thanks for quality content. The major additions of new Euphyllia morphs comping in the last few years coincides with the uptick of illegal coral imports. I wonder if that all correlates? Buy captive whenever possible.

I think a couple species can contain it. Yes. But there are many many species of dynos that we get in our tank, so it’s far from a sure thing that the ones in any given tank will contain it.

I've just found my angel has ick. I thought it was fin rot and treated with fin and tail but I'm pretty sure it is ick now. Can I put the angelfish in a 10 gallon I just emptied, was quarantined, and is cycled and remove the sponge filter? Then, move or do I need to empty both tanks? Should I have a sponge filter in the tank or just air supply?

Around 2004, A gentleman by the name of Jeff Lebos ,Was selling a device online called the "Lunar Tracker",He had two models, one manual and one automatic It does a full lunar cycle in 29.53 days..He used information that he got from the government and academic sources and made them for aquatic and herbology hobbyist interested in reproducing an environmental lunar cycle to help possibly aid organisms in reproducing... He sold a few of them and then sold all of his research and invention to the government,Which they have been using on the International space station for years... I have one of the microprocessor controlled automatic lunar Tracker light systems and the LEDs used are not white or clear....
